I’m not a fuddy duddy when it come to worship. I don’t think we should go back to singing nothing but hymns (although the theology in them is phenomenal). I don’t (usually) think it’s too loud and I have no problem with the lights, etc. But lately I have found myself wondering what has happened to worship. Some of the lyrics sound like they were pulled from a hat filled with random Bible verses/ideas, not to mention the music is hard to follow. Am I supposed to go up or down? Is that the note or is the worship leader doing his/her own thing?
There is a difference between a good worship song and a good corporate worship song. No corporate song should be 6+ minutes, that’s just too long. That works for a worship concert or on a night of worship. It does not work as a worship element in a typical church service. Besides, there is a significant chunk of people in attendance (particularly the non-Christians) who are not engaged by music in the first place. We don’t need to go back to hymns. Let’s just be more selective with the songs we choose to sing.
