Difficult Community

There is a tendency for church leaders to speak about Christian community in idealized terms. Their intentions are good and they recognize that Christian maturity requires us to walk closely with other believers. I wonder though if we do a disservice in the way we portray these environments.

Real, meaningful community is hard work. It does not come naturally. If you want to move past the superficial, things are going to get messy. Sparks will fly. Just read the “one another” commands in the New Testament and you’ll see that. May those of us preach show people that a biblical community is both difficult and worth the effort.
