The spiritual gifts inventory – if you’ve been around the evangelical church in the last 20 years you’ve probably taken one of these. In most cases, it’s a questionnaire asking you to say what you are good at and enjoy. From this your answers are traced to various spiritual gifts. You leave the class and are told “these are your gifts.”
Although there is value in using this as a starting point, too many churches stop short of a critical next step. No confirmation of the gifts is given. You might think you’re good at teaching but that doesn’t mean you are. Churches need to come alongside people and love them enough to objectively confirm their gifting and help them put their gifts to use.
