Church discipline is a messy process. When handled poorly, it can deeply wound those involved and soil the witness of the church before an unbelieving world. Some people want to throw it out altogether because of it’s misuse. “This is what happens when church leaders have too much authority. They inevitably abuse it” or so the argument goes.
Refusing to submit to spiritual authority is not exactly a biblically defensible idea. Not to mention that type of logic cannot be carried to the end. If you avoid something because it’s imperfectly executed, then you will eventually have to avoid a lot of things.
