Sound Bites and Scripture

We live in a sound bite culture. They scroll accross the bottom of our TV. We post them on social media. This blog is a slightly extended version of them. Sound bites are great for making things memorable. But I fear they are hurting our ability to read Scripture.

The Bible is not a collection of sound bites. A verse by itself may appear to mean one thing while in context it means something very different. We are losing the ability to follow extended arguments including those we see in Scripture. We need to get that ability back. The way to do that is to do what we supposedly learned in school – read critically. And the only way to practice reading critically is to spend more time reading and lest time obsessing over sound bites.
